Personality:
Genma tends to be rather calm and collected. He's very serious about anything involving the safety of the village or his comrades, but outside of that he tends to be rather laid-back and casual about things. He can be casual friends with anyone, is usually relatively nice to people unless they seriously try to piss him off, and usually will go out of his way to avoid personal conflicts with comrades.
On the other hand, when he is passionate about something, he can be rather intense. If someone does manage to make him angry, he's a fight and forget it guy, not a grudge holder.
He tends to be rather neat and ordered in his own space... until he gets a project of some type, and then it's everywhere until it's completed.
Quirks: Most notably the senbon in his mouth. If he's somewhere that he doesn't want to be carrying such an obvious weapon, he'll replace it with a long toothpick, or anything of that size and shape that is available. His tendency to wear bandannas and fidget with them might count as a quirk as well: if he's not wearing the backward hitae-ate one, he wears some rather colorful patterned versions. If he's nervous, tired, or stressed, he often takes them off and puts them on again a lot.
Positive attributes: General friendliness and ability to get along with people. Interest in learning. Loyalty.
Flaws: The big glaring one comes first. When not actively on a mission, he has a tendency toward extreme submissive behavior. He can also be a little neglectful toward real-life concerns when he gets caught up in something he's really interested in, such as working with new jutsu or doing art.
Background: Genma comes from a small shinobi clan. His family has been shinobi for a few generations, long enough to develop a couple small family jutsu without having an entire 'style' of their own. The only one Genma really uses is a 'light' jutsu, which started as a joke off his family's name and has been developed to be useful for both burning enemies and the more obvious blinding tactics. Plus amusing children, definitely.
He grew up being taken care of primarily by an older sister, and moved up the shinobi ranks in a series of stops and starts. While there was a three-year stretch between his graduation from the Academy and his Chuunin ranking, he quickly went from Chuunin to Special Jounin in his early teens, and was active in ANBU at sixteen. He has been known as a dependable shinobi for several types of missions, but has most often worked on intel or assassination assignments.
His primary interests since he was a child involved finding new ways to use jutsu, and anything where he can feel like he has created something, whether that is art or any kind of craft. He's very good at cooking and other household skills, mainly because his older sister made him learn. However, there are times when visitors to his house get quickly warned away from the kitchen because it's being used to create new poisons rather than delicacies.
His personal history got a little messy at the time he joined ANBU. The captain that he was assigned to immediately took Genma under his wing in a personal as well as a professional manner, and before the first month was even up Genma found himself wearing a collar with his uniform. Over the course of the fourteen years they were involved, the relationship went through a variety of changes in terms of rules, but to some extent or other, Genma was a submissive the entire time. It very much colors how he sees the world now: both in that he feels cast adrift without Shu-sama to command him and that he feels strangely free as well.
Physical Description:
Very light brown hair that comes just a little below his chin, almost always covered by the bandanna. It's rather fine and flies away if he doesn't keep it covered. Genma's eyes are almost an amber color. He's been told they shine quite a bit in certain lights. His skin is a light tan, and he rarely burns. His lazy smile and heavy-lidded eyes often fool people into underestimating him.
Almost six feet tall, very lean and slender, well-toned like most shinobi. Twenty years of active duty have left him with quite a few scars, but most of them are easily enough hidden by clothing or his uniform. The most notable is a slash across his chest, cutting through one nipple and going all the way up to trace his collarbone in a rather obviously intentional way.
He has two tattoos: his ANBU tattoo and a small one across his right hipbone, the word PET picked out in bold block letters.

Does your character favor a weapon and/or fighting style? Senbon are his favorite weapons. He uses them both with and without poison, depending on the situation. Otherwise, he relies heavily on small weapons like kunai, and often uses exploding notes.
His taijutsu style is rather showy when he does it; he enjoys flips and kicks quite a bit. If he's running low enough on chakra not to use ninjutsu and is out of weapons, though, he's at quite a bit of a disadvantage. Brute strength is definitely not his thing.
Does your character specialize in any of the following: Ninjutsu -- very much so. He has a variety of jutsu that he's either created or modified. His favorites include a test for poisons and a 'whisper' that he uses in social situations mostly.
